Friends. A Manual for Connecting Persons with Disabilities and Community Members.
Amado, Angela Novak; And Others
This manual describes the "Friends" project, a year-long effort in Minnesota to develop methods for the staff of residential service agencies to support people with developmental disabilities in establishing friendships with nondisabled people in their communities. Six agencies around the state selected a total of 23 individuals (ages 11 to 71) in a variety of residential settings to participate. A focus group was formed to support each individual's efforts to build community connections. The major portion of the manual presents a variety of strategies used in the project. Planning strategies focus on discovering the person's interests and capacities, creating a vision, and deciding on first steps. Connecting strategies include: look for opportunities for relationships, strengthen existing relationships, model the meeting of new people, and know the community. Strategies for introducing people include planning for success and knowing how much support is necessary. Among strategies for supporting and nurturing the relationship are demonstrating how it is done, continuing to encourage, solving problems, and watching out for problem areas. Finally, agency support for relationship building includes seeing staff as community connectors, extending agency structures to support friendships, and utilizing volunteers. (Contains 10 resources.)
