Written for the general student, this book is designed to serve as an introduction to the subject of leadership, with a focus on psychological studies of leadership behavior. Part 1 addresses different aspects of the view that "leadership is a process, not a position." Chapters examine how leadership develops, how it is measured or assessed, how it is an art as well as a science, and how leadership is related to other concepts such as power and influence. Part 1 also proposes a framework based on the leader, the followers, and the situation, which provides the structure for the rest of the book. Part 2 addresses the leader, part 3 examines the followers, part 4 discusses the situation, and the fifth part offers a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the interactions and contingencies among these major elements of leadership. The book is based on the premise that leadership develops significantly through experience, but that it can be understood and improved through academic study. (LMI)
