This document is one of eight in a series of guides designed to help teach and counsel troubled youth. This document presents 20 lessons on the social skills necessary to live independently. It includes four lessons designed to help students accurately evaluate their readiness for independent living. Other lessons teach the basic steps for locating housing, for properly completing housing application forms, for making telephone contact with property managers to secure housing, for thoroughly investigating living sites before renting, and for successfully moving into one's own independent living site. Three lessons focus on laws, including the basics of local rental laws to aid students in complying with standards when they live in their independent living rental site; pertinent laws that will apply to students when they move into independent living; and the basic concepts of city, state, county, and country to help students in complying with laws and using government resources, the telephone book, maps, etc. Another lesson shows students that they can always find legal, appropriate recreational activities. Other lessons teach the basics of menu planning and food budgeting, focus on managing crises, explain budgeting and paying bills, and describe how to read the classified advertisements to make household purchases. One lesson trains students to be ready to defend and protect themselves on the streets, in their homes, on their jobs, and on their own. Finally, two lessons focus on how to cope emotionally with independent living. (NB)
