The Directory of Innovations in High Schools. Directory of Innovations Series.
Frazier, Gloria G.; Sickles, Robert N.
As part of the Directory of Innovations Series, this volume provides information about programs and practices for educational improvement and school restructuring. It provides brief overviews of about 150 high school or district-wide programs with descriptions of the following: (1) goals; (2) location; (3) demographics; (4) how it works; (5) how it is funded; (6) things to consider; (7) what is happening; and (8) contact. Part I introduces the concepts, while part II, "Organizing for Learning," explores changing the expectations for standards, outcomes, measures, and accountability, as well as changing patterns of leadership and administration. A third section of part II considers changing the existing structures, while the fourth section examines changing the human resource system. The great majority of programs discussed are in urban schools. In part III, teaching for learning, learning to learn for life and learning for college and work, are reviewed. Part IV describes programs that demonstrate support for learning for students, families, and communities. Three appendixes list the programs and provide indexes by state and program.
