Evaluation of K-12 Physical Education Programs: A Self-Study Approach.
Dummer, Gail M.; And Others
The self-study approach to program evaluation and curricular revision described in this manual represents an effort to revitalize K-12 physical education programs. Procedures are based upon self-study activities conducted as part of the Michigan Exemplary Physical Education Programs Project. An essential ingredient to self-evaluation is the partnership formed by representatives of the K-12 school district and representatives from a college or university. The document describes a process of consensus-building that emphasizes candid discussion of opinions and convictions, a process that leads to decisions that are acceptable to all participants. Four chapters address the following questions to be discussed at team meetings: What is a self-study? Why do a self-study? How should a self-study be conducted? and How can the results of a self-study be used? The major portion of the manual consists of the following appendixes: the Michigan Exemplary Physical Education Programs Project; a glossary; self-study checklist for physical education programs; summary version of the self-study checklist; self-study checklist for physical education programs: profile of program status; a sample self-study report; and 21 transparency masters to accompany team meetings.
