The Cooperative Classroom: Social and Academic Activities.
Rhoades, Jacqueline; McCabe, Margaret E.
This activities and techniques book was developed within the framework of a cooperative learning model. Direct instruction in specific social skills such as communication, problem solving, conflict management, group dynamics, and meeting management is emphasized. The development of thinking skills and building of self-esteem through successful group processes and reward systems permeates all of the activities. Lesson plans state the appropriate grade level for each activity, group size, student roles, time, materials, purpose, and activity descriptions. In addition, many of the lesson plans offer variations on an activity, as well as wrap-up and follow-up exercises. The cooperative learning activities are presented in nine chapters as follows: (1) Opening, Getting Acquainted, Making Transitions, and Energizing; (2) Enhancing Social Awareness and Self-Esteem; (3) Enhancing Communication Skills; (4) Enhancing Problem-Solving Skills; (5) Enhancing Thinking Skills; (6) Wrap Up Activities; (7) Activities Across the Curriculum; (8) Breaking Up the Group; and (9) Jigsaw Approach Variations. Two appendixes provide lists reflecting numerous methods for grouping students, and samples of awards and forms. (LL)
