New Demands, Enduring Values: The Challenge of Human Resources. Highlights of a Transatlantic Seminar on Higher Education (College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, February 10-12, 1993).
Standing Conference of Rectors, Presidents, and Vice-Chancellors of the European Universities.; American Council on Education, Washington, DC.
A 1993 meeting of academic leaders from the United States and European universities, one of a series on the future of higher education, is summarized. The central issues were the preparation of higher education for the future in the midst of massive global change, the collaborative roles of the American Council on Education and the Standing Conference of Rectors, Presidents, and Vice-Chancellors of the European Universities in responding to new demands and challenges, and the potential of these agencies for providing assistance to faculty and staff in coping with change. Related issues discussed include: the changing social and economic context of higher education; tension between the state and the university; variability in the circumstances of each institution; retrenchment; and better use of human resources (students, faculty, administrators), including use of technology to assist with progress. The conference concluded with recognition of five principles to guide change: continuing the dialogue; including Canada in the interaction; concentrating on institutional, not individual or disciplinary, objectives; broadening and deepening the conversation; and establishing a steering group for transatlantic networking. Participants in each conference and their institutional affiliations are listed. (MSE)
