This volume is a comprehensive overview of the literature and generally available reference works on nearly every topic relating to American higher education. Of more than 1,600 works considered, the volume deals with approximately 800 titles. Sources are arranged in chapters according to their form. Eight chapter cover: (1) bibliographies and catalogs; (2) dictionaries and encyclopedias; (3) directories; (4) handbooks and manuals; (5) almanacs and yearbooks; (6) abstracts and indexes; (7) biographical sources; and (8) computer databases. Within each chapter general works are listed first, followed by others arranged by more specific topics. Sources in these subdivisions are arranged alphabetically by main entry. All entries include descriptive annotations indicating a source's purpose, scope, treatment, arrangement, and content. Sources have publication dates that range from 1861 up to and including 1992. While most were published in the 1970s and 1980s, approximately 80 have publication dates in the 1990s. Included are separate author, title, and subject indexes. (JB)
