Ideas for Spelling.
Bolton, Faye; Snowball, Diane
Over the past 20 years much research has been conducted in a wide range of areas related to spelling--from methods of teaching spelling to the natural development of children's spelling ability. Simultaneously, greater understanding about the nature of English orthography has been acquired. Drawing on this accumulated knowledge, and premised on the conviction that the purpose of spelling is writing, this book presents detailed strategies and activities for helping children at all stages of language arts development to become more competent spellers. The book also deals with the development of word lists, the evaluation of spelling progress, and considerations for English-as-a-Second-Language learners. Chapters in the book are: (1) The Context of Spelling; (2) The Nature of the English Orthography; (3) Strategies Used by Competent Spellers; (4) Stages of Children's Spelling Development; (5) Activities Related to Stages of Development; (6) A Balanced Spelling Programme; (7) Assessment and Evaluation; and (8) Considerations for English as a Second Language Learners. Lists of high frequency words, word derivations, prefixes, suffixes, sound/symbol groupings, and dictionaries and word books are attached. (RS)
