Directory of Pollution Prevention in Higher Education: Faculty and Programs 1992. Doc #93-2.
Bakshani, Nandkumar; Allen, David
This survey reports the current state of development of pollution prevention education in Universities in the United States based on a national survey conducted between December 1991 and February 1992. Over 140 individuals (from 80 institutions) believed to be active in pollution prevention education were contacted and of these 89 (from 59 institutions) provided information on their pollution prevention education efforts. Highlights of the survey include: (1) pollution prevention education is heavily concentrated in engineering departments; (2) most curriculum development is done by individuals or small groups in relative isolation at their home institutions; (3) universities in some states are active in a broad spectrum of pollution prevention activities; (4) the lack of consensus on the definition of pollution prevention means that here is no general agreement on the elements and intellectual content of pollution prevention education and research; and (5) an "end-of-pipe" mind-set that evolved from years of control regulations prevails among professionals in industry and at universities. The report contains summaries of responses that briefly describe each program and list telephone number, contact person(s), address, and department in which the program exists. Appendixes include a key word index, programs indexed by faculty name, an index of institutions, an index of programs by state, and a form for submitting updates. (JB)
