Workplace Literacy: A Resource Book.
Guglielmino, Lucy Madsen; Byran, Valerie C.
This resource book provides information on developing a workplace literacy program, descriptions of Florida Workplace Literacy Programs, and an annotated bibliography of resources. An introduction discusses the problem of basic skills deficiencies, projections that indicate the problem will increase, the Florida context, and benefits realized when literacy programs are offered on the job site. The rest of the manual is presented in three sections. The first of these provides a development model and describes each of the following steps: establish a joint planning and implementation team; develop preliminary program goals and target audiences; agree on the responsibilities of the partners; conduct a literacy audit; develop specific program objectives; design the curriculum; recruit participants; screen participants; select and train teachers; deliver instruction; and evaluate and provide feedback. Two sample programs are described. The next section reports data collected in a statewide survey of Florida literacy programs offered on the job site, beginning with an overview of survey results. The data consists of the following: breakdown by type of classes offered; summary by county, number of programs, and type; contributions made by business and industry; other providers of education below grade 12 on the job site; and counties currently planning workplace literacy programs. A directory of present and planned programs by county is presented. The third section is an annotated bibliography of 141 resources in the areas of trends and justifications for workplace literacy, model programs, resources, and teaching strategies. A workplace literacy fact sheet and the survey instrument are appended. (YLB)
