Learning for a Purpose: Participation in Education and Training by Adults from Ethnic Minorities.
Sargant, Naomi
A study examined the participation in education and training by adults from selected minority groups in Great Britain. The primary sample included 300 adults from the Caribbean and 300 from the Indian subcontinent. Two smaller exploratory samples were also surveyed, consisting of 100 adults of Chinese and 100 of black African origin. Findings regarding the education and training patterns of the individual groups were synthesized from unweighted data. In addition, the data for the total sample were weighted according to best estimates of the incidence of different groups resident in Great Britain and then analyzed to identify trends apparent in the sample as a whole. The groups represented in the survey demonstrated high levels of participation in education and training and very high levels of participation in informal learning. Among those who work, most education and training opportunities were not provided through current employers. Strong evidence of significant need and demand for the provision of accessible English language instruction and strong evidence of unmet demand across a broad range of mainly vocational subjects were also identified. (Technical notes on the survey and notes on the tabulations are appended along with the survey questionnaire.) (MN)
