A Study of the Range and Variety of Postschool Options for People with Disabilities.
Macquarie Univ., North Ryde (Australia). School of Education.
This study examined postschool vocational options for people with disabilities in New South Wales (Australia), by means of a survey and interviews with representatives of government agencies, tertiary education facilities, and unions and employer organizations. Results indicated a lack of vocational facilities for young people with severe disabilities and a pressing need for effective programs to encourage employers to include people with disabilities as potential employees. Specific results and recommendations are reported for the following areas: (1) employer attitudes toward employing people with disabilities; (2) employment of people with disabilities in an environment of high general unemployment; (3) profile of competitive employment agencies for people with disabilities; (4) interagency cooperation to avoid duplication of approaches to employers; (5) community attitudes towards the employment of young people with disabilities; (6) parents and service providers working together for the benefit of the worker with a disability; (7) vocational options for people with severe disabilities; (8) development of work-related behaviors; (9) staffing of vocational facilities for people with disabilities; (10) financial disincentives of government benefits; (11) participation of people with disabilities in training schemes available for young people in general; and (12) the role of the school in preparing young people with disabilities for adult life. Questionnaires and the interview schedule are appended. (DB)
