Integrating Academic and Vocational Education: A Literature Review. First in a Series.
Holmes, Wally S.; And Others
This combination literature review and guide is designed to provide classroom teachers, administrators, and teacher educators with practical information on the best academic and vocational education integration practices described in the literature. Section 1 examines the rationale for integrating academic and vocational education and summarizes basic integration and teaching practices. Section 2 discusses eight application models and eight curriculum models for integrating academic and vocational education, and Section 3 lists effective strategies and practices. Promising vocational and academic education integration programs, incentives to integration, success factors, and effective instructional materials are discussed in section 4. Section 5 describes and lists contact persons for 32 programs featuring integration strategies that were identified as outstanding in a 1991 publication of the Southern Regional Education Board. Discussed in the final section are the supportive services, staff development activities, and individual vocational instructor and administrator actions needed for improved academic and vocational education integration in the future. Three appendixes provide: a list of six current integration research projects; an outline of "what works in academic and vocational education" (effective curricular strategies, instructional strategies, cooperative efforts, and administrative practices and procedures); and a list of seven selected resources for academic and vocational curriculum integration.
