Part 1 of this document summarizes the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. Part 2 reviews the act's provisions that prohibit discrimination against disabled individuals in employment. Topics addressed are: (1) individuals protected under the act; (2) the essential functions of jobs; (3) prohibited discrimination; (4) requirements for employers to make reasonable accommodations for disabled employees; (5) provisions concerning employees who handle food; (6) smokers and individuals who use drugs and alcohol; (7) medical questions and examinations; (8) architectural changes that employers are required to make to their facilities to accommodate disabled employees; and (9) enforcement of the act. Part 3 reviews the act's provisions that prohibit discrimination against disabled individuals in public accommodations. Topics considered are prohibited discrimination, including discrimination in public transportation; health and safety exceptions; requirements for building new and altering existing facilities to accommodate disabled individuals; and enforcement. Part 4 provides a checklist of requirements of the ADA which concern employers. Part 5 contains a list of some of the disabilities covered by the ADA. (BC)
