The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 provides protection against discrimination for persons with disabilities. This document provides answers to frequently asked questions about the employment provisions of the act. Topics addressed by these questions include the employment provisions covered by the act, the population protected, the determination of essential functions of jobs, employers' obligations to provide reasonable accommodations for disabled employees, ways to identify reasonable accommodations, undue hardships for employers, questions employers can ask job applicants, individuals who use drugs illegally, and health and safety issues.
