The Emerging Virtual Research Library. SPEC Kit 186.
This publication describes the results of a 1992 survey of Association of Research Libraries member libraries to determine the extent to which they are becoming virtual libraries, i.e., libraries in which computer and telecommunications technologies make access to a wide range of information resources possible. Areas covered by the survey included electronic document delivery; electronic journals; full text databases; end user searching and training; network access; OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) enhancements; cooperative development of databases and hardware; and planning, policies, services, and strategies that emphasize access over ownership. The survey showed that a majority of institutions are making notable commitments to electronic services and systems, including providing electronic document delivery services and access to electronic full text; incorporating the holdings of other libraries in their OPACs; developing campus wide information systems; and implementing policies, services, or reallocations that emphasize access over ownership. Slightly more than half of the libraries reported that they had changed or experimented with staffing patterns or organizational structure to support access to electronic information. The publication also includes a list of responding libraries; copies of planning documents describing preparations for use of electronic services from five universities; three library goals and mission statements; and documents from eight universities describing their information technology projects.
