The Educational System of the Former German Democratic Republic. A Special Report.
This publication gives a detailed description of the educational system of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) from preschool through higher education. The first of the report's four chapters offers an introduction to the nation and to the educational system's history, legal basis, and grading scale. Chapter II covers the nation's preschool through secondary education including special schools for gifted children, schools for the handicapped, vocational schools, private religious schools and alternative schools. Chapter III treats higher education and includes a historical review as well as information about admission, student status enrollment, the academic year, first, second, and third degree programs, religious colleges, and higher education credentials. Chapter IV discusses adult education in the form of postgraduate studies and adult education colleges. Extensive appendixes contain a listing of university level institutions and 13 sample documents consisting for the most part of various types of certificates. (Contains 12 references.) (JB)
