Leadership Skills You Never Outgrow: Leader's Guide.
Munson, Mary K.; Zwilling, Al
This guide was developed to assist 4-H club leaders in implementing a youth leadership skills project. Leadership skills are categorized into three levels: personal skills, skills working within groups, and skills leading groups. The first chapter discusses leadership and the value of teaching leadership skills to youth. The leadership life skill areas emphasized in the project include: (1) understanding self; (2) communicating; (3) getting along with others; (4) learning to learn; (5) making decisions; (6) managing; and (7) working with groups. A chart is provided that relates the specifics of these skill areas to four related leadership project books developed for youth. The second chapter describes the leadership skills project including objectives, curriculum, and roles of leaders. Chapter 3 outlines characteristics of children ages 9-11, 12-14, and 15-18 and implications for learning. The last chapter gives the following information: (1) roles of project helpers and helping youth locate helpers; (2) helping members develop a leadership plan and assess personal leadership skills; (3) helping members with learning activities and applying leadership skills to life situations; (4) assisting members in evaluating and documenting leadership learning; and (5) helping members in group situations. Appendices include sample lesson plans for introducing the seven leadership life skill areas during club meetings and a sample leadership program for older youth. (LP)
