Enrollment Trends and Student Characteristics, Fall 1989.
College of the Canyons, Valencia, CA.
Comprised principally of tables and bar graphs, this report provides data on enrollment trends and student characteristics at College of the Canyons (CC) in Valencia, California, for each fall term year from 1985 through 1989. Information is included on student enrollment totals in credit courses; high schools last attended by new freshmen; student ethnicity, age, enrollment status, and gender; and educational attainment. Highlighted data for the 5-year period includes the following: (1) enrollment in credit courses grew 56%, from 3,630 in 1985 to 5,667 in 1989; (2) of the 1,555 students who graduated from district area high schools in 1989, 480 enrolled in CC; (3) for the period, enrollment of American Indians increased from 16 to 40 (150%), Filipinos increased from 24 to 59 (146%), and Hispanics increased from 247 to 548 (122%); (4) in 1989, 42.9% of CC students were 18-21 years old, while the average age was 26.9 years old; (5) for each year, roughly 30% of students were enrolled in 12 or more units and 70% were enrolled in less than 12 units; (6) students enrolled only in the evening decreased from 40.7% to 32.5% for the period, students enrolled in only day classes remained steady at 37%, and students enrolled in both increased from 22% to 30.3%; (7) the proportion of male to female students remained steady at about 42% male to 58% female; and (8) 4.3% of enrolled students in 1989 had an associate degree, and 5.5% had a bachelor's degree.
