Japan Resource Catalogue: A Guide for New England Educators.
Barsh, Adele L., Ed.
This catalog of instructional resources for teaching about Japan provides annotated entries under three main headings: Japan Resources (resources that are specific to Japan); General Resources (materials that are Japan-related but not Japan-specific); and Organizations. Japan Resources, which includes the major portion of the materials, lists 110 curriculum units, 149 video cassettes (including one 6-cassette series), 9 film guides, 44 slide sets and filmstrips, 16 recordings, 9 educational kits, 25 graphic resources (maps, posters, language charts), 23 resource guides for teachers, and a topical list of books grouped into 17 categories, including Art, Music, Film; Children's Books; Culture; History; Language; Religion; Women; and Others. The 64 Japan-related general resources that follow next are listed under substantially the same headings as the Japan resources. Almost all resources except books indicate recommended grade level ranging from K through 12 with various levels between. Under Organizations, 57 museums in 6 New England states with Massachusetts having by far the largest number, and 58 other organizations are listed: these include 27 centers located in various states and in Japan that produce or distribute materials on Japan of interest to New England pre-college educators; 5 educator exchange centers with Japan; 8 Japan societies and associations; 12 sister city/state organizations; and 6 state departments of education. The catalogue also provides information about the New England Program for Teaching About Japan (NEPTAJ), including its programs and publications. A separate section describes the loan and reserve policy for borrowing NEPTAJ materials from the Five College Center for East Asian Studies, NEPTAJ's sponsoring organization. A subject index and alphabetical index of titles also are included. (LBG)
