For Their Sake: Recognizing, Responding to, and Reporting Child Abuse.
Johnson, Becca Cowan
This guidebook provides specific information about child abuse to recreational staff, camp staff, childcare workers, and others who provide programs and services for minors. Part I describes the prevalence and causes of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect; outlines physical and behavioral indicators that can alert staff members to the possibility of abuse; and discusses state mandatory reporting laws and requirements. Part II discusses what to do when child abuse is discovered or suspected, typical reactions of victims of abuse, and practical suggestions for working with abused children. Part III outlines characteristics of potential abusers and sex offenders; provides guidelines for staff selection and training; discusses precautions and prevention for directors, staff members, and children; and describes documentation policies and procedures. This book contains 54 references and suggested readings. Appendices contain sample forms, a sample child abuse law, audiovisual resources, organizational and support-group resources, case histories, checklists of abuse indicators and effects, handouts for children, and summaries of prevention information. An index is included. (SV)
