Public Infant Centres in Italy: A National Survey.
Becchi, Egle; Ferrari, Monica
This survey was undertaken to gather accurate and reliable information on private and government-supported day care centers within Italy, and to compare such data to currently available government statistics. A questionnaire was drawn up and sent to the 21 regions of Italy to examine: (1) the number of centers in each region and the number of children attending each center; (2) the number and type of staff at day care centers; and (3) the management and organization of day care centers. It was found that some regions had many more day care centers than are recorded in government statistics, that the provision for children varies considerably from region to region, and that day care centers in northern and central Italy tend to provide their staff with more training and refresher courses than centers in southern Italy. It was also discovered that some regions that already have a low ability to satisfy potential day care demand were actually converting some day care center structures to other uses. (MDM)
