Reading in the Content Areas for Junior High and High School.
Cochran, Judith A.
Reflecting concern for the myriad problems resulting from the presence of poor readers in secondary schools today, this book shows content area teachers why they must and how they can improve students' reading deficiencies. The book provides an explanation of reading skills and learning difficulties in a quick and easy format; activities to develop reading skills and remedy learning difficulties; content explanations in the first part of each chapter followed by a teaching activities section; and application exercises taken from classroom situations that require students to apply, synthesize, and analyze information presented in the chapter. Chapters in the book are: (1) Reading in the Content Areas: Multiple Literacy; (2) Using Textbooks Effectively; (3) Testing; (4) Vocabulary Development; (5) Reading Comprehension; (6) Reading and Writing: Avenues to Critical Thinking; (7) Study Skills; (8) Remedial, Dyslexic, ESL, and Talented and Gifted Readers; (9) Television, Computers, and Reading Instruction; and (10) Overview of Reading Program Organization. The book is intended for a wide range of uses: as a textbook in teacher preparation courses, as an in-service or self-instructional book for teachers, for parent tutoring, and as a workbook for junior high, high school, and college students.
