Model Learner Outcomes for Early Childhood Education: Birth to Nine Years.

Chapter 1 of this document on learner outcomes in early childhood education (ECE) discusses the values, educational philosophy, mission, and goals of the Minnesota State Board of Education. Chapter 2 describes components of an effective early childhood program, the role and purpose of ECE, and emerging issues in ECE. An overview of learner outcomes in ECE is presented in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 discusses the components of ECE programs as they relate to children; partnerships between home, school, and community; children's interactions with other individuals; integrated curricula; and learning environments. Chapter 5 considers indicators in children's behavior that are used to assess children's development and learning. These indicators are listed according to: (1) six domains of growth, including personal, social, physical, cognitive, and aesthetic growth, and growth in communication abilities; (2) five age levels from 15 months through 9 years; and (3) several specific areas of growth within the six domains of growth. A bibliography of more than 150 items is provided. (BC)
