Investigating in the Social Subjects. SCRE Project Report No. 34.
Holroyd, Colin; Munn, Pamela
This report discusses findings from a research project examining the demands made on students and teachers by the "investigations" (or research) required of students in social subjects in Scottish schools. Students and teachers in six secondary schools in Scotland were interviewed, and it was found that teachers were seriously concerned about the demands made by the investigations upon them. However, students found investigations enjoyable and valuable, and they did not think they were particularly difficult. The report also contains a brief set of recommendations, among which it was urged that more definitive guidelines concerning the manner in which investigations are conducted be provided to both teachers and students.
