The African-American Male: An Endangered Species. Black Family Hearing of the Legislative Black Caucus (Sacramento, California, October 26, 1990).

Testimony concerning the African American family and in particular, males as an endangered species, is presented in this report of a hearing before the California State legislature. Among the witnesses was Judge Loncke, who discussed issues of court procedure and police role as well as patterns of low education, hopelessness, and youth among offenders. Judge G. Ransom spoke next and addressed legislation and the needs of probation and other correctional agencies. Attorney J. Burris spoke about his experiences in criminal defense. Inglewood (California) Chief of Police, R. Johnson, summarized the current plight of black males, particularly their high rate of incarceration and violent death. Another witness, Barbara Lee, focused on the legislative agenda and prison construction bond ballet measures. R. Johnson spoke about rites of passage programs for African American male youth. W. Valdry, president of One Hundred Black Men of Los Angeles (California), shared some of his experiences with the Young Black Scholars Program. The Reverend C. Jones described the crippling effect on the black community of destroying male leadership. R. Dawson, Coordinator for the Center of Black on Black Crime, called for educational reforms. Dr. Irene Pinkert called for effective programs for black youth. Included also are the comments of citizens who spoke during a period of open testimony chaired by Assemblywoman Gwen Moore. (JB)
