Easier Theorized Than Done: Five Papers on the Systematic Cooperation between Theory and Practice.
This book is a compilation of five papers presented at conferences between the years 1984 and 1990 on the integration of theory and practice in mathematics education. An introduction acknowledges the chasm felt between theory and practice, and gives an overview of the five papers. The first paper, "Developmental Research on Paper and in Action," deals with the fundamental misunderstanding between teacher and researcher and analyzes their different viewpoints. The second paper, "Ten Major Issues Concerning Systematic Cooperation Between Theory and Practice in Mathematics Education," discusses 10 issues revolving around the problem of teachers being generally skeptical of the benefit of theory and science of mathematics education. The third contribution, "The Dream of Cooperation Between Theory and Practice," discusses the transience of theory. The fourth contribution, "On Levels of Interaction Between Theory and Practice," discusses three levels of interaction between researcher and teacher. The last contribution, "Theory and Practice in Mathematics for the Less Able," epistemologically analyzes the theory-practice problematic. (MDH)
