Helping Churches Mind the Children: A Guide for Church-Housed Child Care Programs. Revised Edition.
Freeman, Margery, Ed.
This manual provides information for pastors, parents, and church members who are starting a child care program in their church, and for churches that are changing or expanding their child care program. Chapter 1 reports the results of a 1982 survey of child care in local parishes by the National Council of Churches. Chapter 2 explains four steps in assessing a church's child care program: (1) establishing the need for a program; (2) defining the purpose of a program; (3) assessing the church's resources; and (4) choosing a program. Sample child care surveys are provided. The third chapter considers board membership, governance, licensure, objectives, and personnel policies. A checklist of steps in opening a program is provided. Chapter 4 examines communication between the church and the child care community. Resource materials on selected topics are described in the last chapter. Topics include choosing child care, fundraising, personnel, family day care, infant and toddler care, multicultural planning, health care, child abuse, program and child evaluation, and resources for church-housed child care programs (religious resources, professional organizations and advocacy agencies, and publications and periodicals). Appendixes include a policy statement on child care; a resolution on child care as ministry; information on licensing; a sample lease; and sample start-up and operating budgets. (BC)
