Help Instructional Growth Happen: Final Evaluation Report, Chapter 2 Competitive Grant Program.
Fortune, Jim C.; And Others
Outcomes of a restructuring program implemented in the Fluvanna County High School, Help Instructional Growth Happen, are reported in this paper. Program goals were to: (1) establish a cooperative steering committee; (2) develop a cooperative learning language; and (3) implement interdisciplinary teacher teams. Three areas were evaluated--accountability, effectiveness, and impact. Methodology involved document analysis, observations, interviews, pre- and posttest teacher surveys, pre- and posttest surveys of a subsample of 40 students, and analysis of achievement scores. A more inclusive testing involved 159 students taking the pretest and 55 students taking the posttest. Twenty teachers took both the pre- and posttest. Findings indicate that students in the restructuring group scored higher in social studies and self-concept than those in the traditional group. Other outcomes included improved attendance and fewer disciplinary referrals. Participating teachers expressed positive or neutral responses. The low teacher response rate suggests problems in the program, such as time constraints, overly nontraditional concepts, inexperienced teachers, and curriculum training deficiencies. Supplementary teacher training and time are recommended. Six tables are included. (LMI)
