This guide presents alternatives to traditional inservice training for prekindergarten through grade 12 teachers; it lists a total of 113 institutes, fellowships, and awards that assist professional growth but are individually initiated and implemented. Following an introduction which explores various approaches to professional development and utilization of the guide, entries are organized by discipline as follows: Arts; Business, Industry, and Economics; English/Language Arts; Foreign Language; General Research; History/Social Studies; Humanities; International Studies; Library Science and Media; Mathematics and Science; Space Education; Special Education and Gifted and Talented Education; Educational Improvement; Excellence in Teaching; Educational Leadership; and Technology. Many entries include the names of past participants/recipients who have indicated an interest in sharing information. The guide concludes with an additional list of state, regional, and national organizations which offer professional development opportunities for teachers including conferences, seminars, summer institutes, grants, and newsletters.
