Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in Alberta: 1989-1990.

Surveys of school administrators, teachers, and parents were used to gather data about students with impaired hearing in Alberta during the 1989-1990 school year. This survey report begins with an introductory section which highlights the findings. Section II then describes student characteristics of hearing impaired students, including the number of these students, their age, gender, place of residence, geographical distribution, hearing ability, age at onset, use of hearing aids, causes of impaired hearing, visual ability, other disabilities, school progress, communication method, and extracurricular activities. Section III contains information about the settings in which these students are educated and the resources available for their instruction and care, such as number of students with impaired hearing per school and per class; support, consultation, and evaluation services; and amplification/technical devices available to teachers. Sections IV and V describe administrators and teachers and summarize their attitudes and opinions about the education of students with impaired hearing. Section VI provides data about the students' families and home environments. Section VII describes the survey methodology. An appendix contains tables of survey data. (JDD)
