Education improvement and renewal continues to capture the attention of researchers, policymakers, and the public. Although much has been done to enhance public education programs and services, many challenges still remain. This document acts as a tool for use throughout this period of public school reform. It contains state level data on an array of topics relevant to the complex enterprise of public education. These include: (1) Population; (2) Enrollment, Attendance, and Membership; (3) Faculty; (4) General Financial Resources; (5) Governmental Revenue; (6) School Revenue; (7) Government Expenditures; and (8) School Expenditures. These state-by-state figures permit a statistical assessment of the scope of public education and an identification of emerging trends in these key areas. Each category of data is accompanied by figures and tables to aid in drawing comparisons. The reader is urged to refrain from drawing conclusions solely from the tables in the report, and to supplement these rank-ordered data with specific information about state and local activities and services related to public education. A glossary and an index to the tables are appended. (9 references) (LAP)
