Improving Fourth Grade Students' Word Meaning Vocabularies in the Content Areas through an Eclectic Approach.
Summers, Stella
The practicum described in this paper used an eclectic approach to promote word meaning vocabulary growth in 14 fourth-grade students from an urban elementary school who had scored below 74% on a vocabulary pretest. Students were tutored once or twice a week for a 10-week period with direct vocabulary instruction, utilizing semantic mapping and semantic feature analysis, and the promotion of wide reading. In addition, a program called the "Word Search Adventure," designed by the researcher, was used to monitor each student's progress and to motivate participation. Results indicated an average increase of 64% on the vocabulary posttest, and also showed that the strategies utilized improved the below average student's word meaning vocabulary in the content areas. Results further indicated that external incentives alone were not sufficient in increasing all students' independent reading at home, and that additional strategies need to be incorporated. (Two tables of data are included; 4 appendixes--the pretest, posttest, "Word Search Adventure," and practicum timeline--and 20 references are attached.) (Author/PRA)
