75 Hour Nurse Aide Course.
Iowa Univ., Iowa City. Coll. of Education.
This 75-hour nurse aide course has been designed to meet the training requirements of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 for aides working in nursing facilities and skilled nursing facilities. Emphasis in the course is on students achieving a basic level of knowledge and demonstrating skills to provide safe, effective resident care. The course is organized in six units. Unit 1 introduces the course, outlines the characteristics and functions of effective nurse aides, provides an overview of nursing facilities, and touches on legal/ethical requirements. Unit 2 focuses on a safe environment. Unit 3 discusses the aide's role in assisting residents with personal hygiene needs, and unit 4 discusses the nutritional needs of patients. Unit 5 describes routine care procedures performed by aides; the final unit, unit 6, emphasizes the needs of residents with special conditions. Included in the course syllabus is a competency list; teaching outlines for each unit that relate objectives, content, and teaching methods; and skills checklists for evaluating student achievement.
