Head Start for Learning Disabled Students. Final Report 1990-1991.
Reading Area Community Coll., PA.
A project was conducted at Reading Area Community College (Pennsylvania) to develop the basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills of students with learning disabilities, to develop the self-esteem of these students, to motivate them, and to develop a model program that could be used by other adult education providers. The project featured a special open-ended class for adult basic education students who had learning disabilities and who had experienced repeated failure in school. The class was conducted by a teacher trained to deal with learning disabilities. The special class used nontraditional teaching techniques, including "sight/sound reading" and "tic-tac-toe math." During the project, 13 students entered the class, and 9 students reached their learning goals. The students were extremely pleased and proud of their achievements, because they had had academic problems most of their lives. (Appendixes include an evaluation form and handwritten evaluations by students.) (KC)
