Senior Survival Skills Training.
Washington-Greene County Community Action Corp., Waynesburg, PA.
A demonstration project established the need for, interest in, and the feasibility of an ongoing, volunteer-based, educational program designed to meet the specific needs of the elderly population in a rural county. The program established training sessions, attracting participation in the sessions and developing a network of interested community representatives. Programs were held at Seniors Centers in West Greene, Pennsylvania. Several barriers facing seniors who want educational services were addressed: transportation; hesitancy to try new things; different attention and focus from younger adults; differing interests; and differing materials and techniques. Senior citizens participating in the program wanted to remain independent and self-sufficient, but were unable to because of low-level communication and/or computational skills. Curriculum packets focused on nutrition, access to services, medical information, applications for benefits; and social skills. Five focus sessions trained 395 seniors. (The bulk of the document contains six appendices: curriculum supplements; handouts; newspaper articles and fliers; attendance information; evaluation survey; and senior survival skills training coordinator's diary.)
