Using Clay Therapy To Change Negative Behaviors.
Kahn, Victoria
This manual describes a clay therapy program appropriate for use with students having a variety of exceptionalities and in an age range from 6 to 18 years. Organization and staffing are briefly discussed followed by a list of long range goals (affective, motoric, and aesthetic), suggestions for clay therapy implementation to achieve these goals, and a brief description of materials and equipment. Six lesson plans provide detailed instructions for making a pinch pot, making a coil pot, introducing glazing, using the slab technique, sculpting animals, and additional glazing. Suggestions for advanced lessons are also included. An appendix describes use of the clay therapy program in seven settings (e.g., adolescent unit of a state mental hospital, a residential school, and a special education class) involving students with moderate to severe emotional disturbances often with additional minimum brain dysfunction and/or retardation. Also appended are suggestions for managing adolescents and basic information on ceramics. Eighteen resources are recommended and a bibliography of 7 items is provided. (DB)
