The Overage Student: Candidate for School Failure.

Elementary students who are overage due to retention are compared with those who are overage for other reasons on both at-risk indicators and demographic factors. Records of 127 fifth, sixth, and seventh graders were examined with respect to student performance on academic indicators of at-risk behavior. Findings indicate that overage students were at greater risk for failure to complete academically appropriate programs than were other members in their cohort and that grade retention was not a significant factor of academic failure. No significant differences were found to exist among the academic indicators of at-risk performance, absence, and demographics between those retained and those not retained. Recommendations are made to consider interventions and practices other than in-grade retention and to reexamine district policies. Thirty-four tables are included. (132 references) (LMI)
