The literature on teacher education is vast. This review, though not complete, examines what is known about the context, goals, and results of teacher education. The document aims to be a summary of research literature rather than a methodological critique. The context is taken to include the academic and political environments, the individuals involved in teacher education programs, and projections of teacher supply and demand. Both discrete and holistic goals are considered. The literature on the outcomes of teacher education is considered in terms of program, context, and goals. Whenever possible, Canadian publications are included among the 129 references cited. (Author/LL)
