Comparative Review of Elementary Social Studies Textbooks.

Four elementary social studies textbook series are reviewed and compared with particular attention paid to the extent to which the textbooks are globally oriented. The trend of emphasizing global education in the social studies also is discussed. As used in this paper, "global education" includes the study of world geography, world history, and similarities and differences in cultures and languages. The output of eight commercial publishing houses for social studies books and media are reviewed to determine what additional materials are available to teachers, and recommendations of the National Commission on Social Studies in the Schools are noted and discussed. The texbooks compared are as follows: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1980 and 1991 series; Houghton Mifflin, 1980 and 1991 series; Scott, Foresman, 1983 series; and Silver, Burdett, 1982 and 1991 series. Changes made by the three publishers of 1991 series since their earlier editions are noted, especially in light of the National Commission's recommendations. The paper concludes with some reflections and recommendations on the question of how social studies teachers can best prepare students to live in a global society. (DB)
