This resource book contains 380 references related to school dropouts and a list of organizations working on the issue. References are grouped according to type of document or subject of the document. The first section contains citations from newspapers or magazines that take a global look at issues related, directly or indirectly, to the school dropout problem in the United States. These issues include: demographics; ethnicity; the economic, political, and sociological aspects of dropping out; and potential solutions. The section titled "The Hispanic Dropout Problem: A Concern for Us All" contains citations that address policies, reform efforts, and the current status of the problem. References related to the role that business can play in improving education are included in the third section "The American Business Complex: Combatting Education Failure." Separate sections are provided for specialized references, reports, books, and organizations working on the dropout problem. References are indexed by author, and by subject for newspapers, magazines, and reports. One table displays the 1988 dropout rates for each state and the District of Columbia.
