Developmental Kindergarten: Definition and Description.

This paper sets forth a definition and operational description of a developmental program that should be of use as a guide, especially to Virginia's teachers and administrators. Also included in the paper are kindergarten curriculum objectives in the areas of language arts, mathematics, science, art, social studies, family life, health, mental health, nutrition, personal growth and personal health, safety and first aid, physical fitness and conditioning, movement education, rhythmic activities and dance, stunts, tumbling, gymnastics, game skills, and music. These objectives are followed by a suggested schedule for 6-hour day programs and guidelines for school organization and practices related to developmental kindergarten programs in the areas of parent involvement, teacher training, formal and informal assessment, and transition from kindergarten to first grade. Concluding discussion offers a statement of resolve to promote and maintain appropriate programs in kindergarten. (RH)
