This report presents enrollment data for institutions of higher education in the 50 states and the District of Columbia from the "Fall Enrollment" survey which is part of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System survey administered by the National Center for Education Statistics. The first set of tables presents enrollment statistics in higher education for the fall of 1989 by selected institutional and student characteristics. The second set of tables displays state enrollment data for selected years, as well as current statistics, by type and control of institution and sex of student. The introduction presents highlights of the findings. Among these are findings showing that, since 1988, there have been: a 3 percent increase in higher education enrollment; a 2 percent increase in private school enrollment; a 3 percent increase in public school enrollment; and a drop of 1.8 percent in enrollment of first-time freshmen with a greater decrease for women than for men; however, the number of women in postbaccalaureate programs increased more than the number of men in such programs). Appendix A presents enrollment data by age of students along with a discussion of possible questions regarding the validity of such data.
