Planning Makes College Possible.
Belmont, Jean
Written by a college financial aid administrator, this booklet is intended to help parents of younger children plan and prepare for the financial aspects of college education. After an introductory chapter, Chapter II lists current and projected (year 2000) costs at the most expensive colleges and at New York City colleges. Chapter III presents the college perspective on costs, noting decreased federal and state student aid and mounting labor costs. Chapter IV offers tools for determining financial need including a worksheet for determining parents' expected contribution and various associated tables, and Chapter V offers a sample case study. Chapter VI provides a chart to help parents plan their yearly savings and a discussion of such savings vehicles as savings bonds, life insurance, bank certificates of deposit, and money market accounts. Chapter VII presents a worksheet to help families plan their savings/investments, while Chapter VIII reviews current financial aid programs including the Pell Grant program, federal campus-based programs, New York State aid, institutional aid, loans, and payment plans. Finally, Chapter IX provides figures showing the economic return of a college education; Chapter X looks at alternate means of financing college (e.g., prepayment programs); and Chapter XI offers additional tips such as establishing an individual retirement account.
