Multimedia Approach to Self-Paced Individualized Instruction in Automotive Mechanics and Other Vocational Programs. Final Report.

A project developed, field tested, implemented, and disseminated a management system, support materials, and references for a self-paced individualized instructional program in automotive mechanics and food services. During the program, the Planwriter component of the SAGE/Compute-a-Match Assessment System was used to develop a management system for self-paced individualized instruction. A sequence of instruction was outlined, with each unit identified and objectives and competencies produced for them. An inventory of instructional materials on hand was taken and a search for additional materials was made. (A complete learning activity package--LAP--for each unit of instruction was to be developed in automotive mechanics; however, only basic electricity was completed during the project.) Lectures were videotaped, and illustrations, filmstrips, transparencies, slides, and any other teaching strategies involved for each unit were recorded. A series of main ideas were written for each unit. Pretests and posttests were used to screen students into and out of units. Twenty-two students were involved in field testing, and all were very positive about using the LAPs. As a result of the project, students can progress at their own pace through these training programs. (Ten appendixes, which constitute three-fourths of the report, include the following: project documents management system; resource inventory for automotive mechanics and food services; LAP checklist; sample LAP; pretests; posttests; job sheet; student evaluation form; list of materials produced; and records of visitations from other schools.)
