Anatomy of Racism.
Goldberg, David Theo, Ed.
There is a growing recognition that racism, far from being an unvarying and monolithic attitude, comprises many different racisms. This book brings together analyses of different forms of racist expression in philosophy, literature, popular modes of discourse, politics, and law. Its aim is to identify and isolate the cultures of racist discourse so as to understand and undermine its varied manifestations. Contributions to this anthology include the following: (1) "Racisms" (Kwame Anthony Appiah); (2) "Biology and the New Racism" (Martin Barker); (3) "Race and Gender: The Role of Analogy in Science" (Nancy Leys Stepan); (4) "Toward a Critical Theory of 'Race'" (Lucius Outlaw); (5) "Racism and the West: From Praxis to Logos" (Christian Delacampagne); (6) "Equality: Beyond Dualism and Oppression" (John L. Hodge); (7) "The Fact of Blackness" (Frantz Fanon); (8) "Bichon and the Blacks" (Roland Barthes); (9) "African Grammar" (Roland Barthes); (10) "What Celie Knows That You Should Know" (Barbara Christian); (11) "'I'm Down on Whores': Race and Gender in Victorian London" (Sander L. Gilman); (12) "'Ours to Jew or Die': Celine and the Categories of Anti-Semitism" (Julia Kristeva); (13) "Interrogating Identity: The Postcolonial Prerogative" (Homi K. Bhabha); (14) "Zionism from the Standpoint of Its Victims" (Edward W. Said); (15) "Racism and the Innocence of Law" (Peter Fitzpatrick); (16) "One Nation under a Groove: The Cultural Politics of 'Race' and Racism in Britain" (Paul Gilroy); (17) "Paradoxes of Universality" (Etienne Balibar); (18) "The Social Formation of Racist Discourse" (David Theo Goldberg); and (19) "Critical Remarks" (Henry Louis Gates, Jr.). A selected biography of 105 entries is included. (CJS)
