Activities of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Services (NCLIS) during fiscal year 1988-1989 are reported under three broad headings--Literacy, Democracy, and Productivity. The report under Literacy features two major projects: working with the American Association of School Librarians to initiate and convene a Symposium on Information Literacy and Education for the 21st Century in April 1989, and the second year of the Federal/State Cooperative System for Public Library Statistics (FSCS), a cooperative program with NCLIS and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The primary activities reported under Democracy are concerned with the building of a supporting organizational structure for the White House Conference on Library and Information Services (WHCLIS II) to be held July 9-13, 1991. Activities in the area of preservation are also noted. Activities reported under Productivity include the appointment of an Information Age Committee to study the impact of technology on society; continuing study, together with Canada and the United Kingdom, of the role of information in the national economy and public policy initiatives that would increase the societal benefits of modern information technologies; continuing promotion of the awareness of the information needs of minority populations; the beginning of a major new initiative for library and information services to Native Americans; national information policy issues; and international programs. A brief report on personnel and administration concludes the report, and the laws authorizing NCLIS and the White House Conference are appended. Information about current and former Commission members and a fiscal statement are also included. (BBM)
