This manual provides guidelines and materials for librarians planning a summer reading program for children in North Carolina on the theme of outer space. The introduction includes discussions of summer reading materials and programs; patterns (clip art) for a small poster and a reading record insert; suggestions for involving groups of children and providing library services to visually or physically impaired children; and a description of the Morehead Planetarium. The remaining eight sections focus on: (1) Sources and Resources (raising money, resources for programs, support from local newspapers, Morehead Planetarium Gift Shop, sources for inexpensive toys/prizes, places to visit, and a planetarium guide); (2) Public Relations (press release guidelines, PSAs (public service announcements), a letter from the State Superintendent, decorations and bulletin boards, displays, nametags, clip art, borders, and promotionals); (3) Programs for Toddlers and Preschoolers, School Age, and All Ages (suggestions for books, films, flannelboard stories, fingerplays, activities; instructions and/or patterns for crafts; and scripts for presenting stories); (4) Crafts and Activities (suggestions for food, crafts, science activities, puppet shows, and games and contests); (5) Activity Sheets (for younger and older children with answer sheets for puzzles); (6) Bibliographies (picture books and easy readers, children's science fiction books, children's nonfiction books, free and inexpensive materials, and a basic astronomy library); (7) Films and Videos; and (8) Reading Aloud (parental involvement, parents and children reading together).
