Teacher Appraisal and Student Achievement. An Inservice Package Based upon the Texas Teacher Appraisal System (TTAS).
Veir, Carole
Given current emphasis on the importance of the principal as an instructional leader, this document outlines a training session designed to help principals learn and share effective teaching methods. Trends in inservice training are discussed, and research on aspects of teacher effectiveness such as clarity of presentation, student-centered instruction, variety, and "over-learning" is reviewed. This training program in effective teaching strategies uses "Strategies and Techniques That Encourage Learning," the last of four videotapes entitled "Motivating Students to Learn" in "The Master Teacher" program. Results to be expected upon successful implementation of effective classroom practices and the agenda for the half-day inservice training session for principals are given. Appended are reciprocal interaction models of teaching effective instructional practices; an outline of the videotape; a list of activities to use with the videotape; the agenda, goal, and rationale for the training program; parallels between staff development and direct instruction; and five aspects of clarity.
